The Birley Academy PE department wins prestigious Steel City trophy

We are delighted to announce that our PE department has been awarded the Steel City Trophy by the Sheffield Federation for School Sport.

The award recognises the department’s exceptional progress and the outstanding sporting opportunities it provides for students. It was presented to the department at the Sheffield Federation for School Sport Awards Ceremony held at Sheffield Town Hall. The event brought together schools from across the city to celebrate excellence dedication and achievement in school sport.

Stuart Perry Faculty Leader of Performance at The Birley Academy expressed his pride in the recognition and the hard work of his team saying:

“I am immensely proud of the efforts of the department in providing opportunities for students to compete against other schools and represent the academy in such impeccable manners. Running clubs and fixtures after school alongside the many responsibilities of teaching can be challenging but the dedication shown by the team has been truly outstanding.

“We would like to thank the Federation for awarding the PE department this prestigious honour.”

In recognition of this award the academy is proud to highlight the continued growth of its sporting provision which now includes an extensive extracurricular programme featuring sports such as netball, football, athletics, futsal and trampolining. Students across all year groups have embraced these opportunities and have gone on to represent the school with distinction in fixtures and competitions citywide. The department also continues to champion inclusion ensuring all young people can engage with sport through initiatives such as SEND (special educational needs and/or disabilities) activity days and participation in Move More Sheffield events.

Students celebrated for contributions to Sheffield Boys Football Team

Two Year 9 Birley Academy students Lennon Bell and Charlie Ellis were also celebrated for their contributions to the Sheffield Boys Football Team which won the National Cup earlier this year.

The team received the Team of the Year award further highlighting the strength talent and rising profile of sport within The Birley Academy community.

Reflecting on the academy’s recent sporting successes Mr Perry added:

“Sport is really growing in stature at the academy, and these awards are just rewards for the efforts and talents of the students and staff.”

Headteacher Victoria Hall praised the department’s commitment and the wider impact of sport across the school community saying:

“This award reflects not only the dedication of our PE staff but also the enthusiasm and resilience of our students. Sport plays a vital role in building confidence teamwork and aspiration here at The Birley Academy and we are incredibly proud of what has been achieved. This recognition is richly deserved and a testament to the positive culture growing across our school.”
