I am very proud to be the Headteacher of The Birley Academy and feel honoured and privileged to be able to work with our pupils, parents, carers, colleagues and community to be a part of the team who are making Birley Academy a brilliant place to learn and work.
I am passionate about working with our staff in school, and with colleagues across L.E.A.D. Academy Trust to ensure that the education that we provide to our pupils is of the highest quality, studying a broad range of subjects complemented by a clear personal development and wider curriculum offer.
I don’t have a complicated view of what makes a brilliant school and I aim to keep things simple. At Birley, I will ensure that we keep focussed on maintaining a calm and orderly environment, having expectations of exceptional attendance, delivering the highest academic standards and encouraging every student to fulfil their potential in whichever areas their talents and interests may lie. Our pupils are brilliant young people and they deserve every opportunity to nurture and showcase their skills.
We have our five core values of Respect, Kindness, Courage, Integrity and Ambition – and as Headteacher I want to see every one of our pupils and staff demonstrate these each day – with recognition for those who regularly go above and beyond for our community.
Most importantly, as a parent myself, I recognise the huge responsibility that schools have to provide for the young people in our care and will do all that I can to make sure that every single pupil at The Birley Academy continues to be valued and cherished as an individual, and feels safe and supported in our school.
I look forward to sharing positive news with you on a regular basis and making The Birley Academy the school of choice in our region of Sheffield. I will share regular updates on our website, social media, and through Headteacher bulletins, and I look forward to meeting our parents, carers and the wider community at parents’ evenings and celebrations, performances and sporting events.

Along with the introduction of phone pouches… please ensure your child has a BAG to put them in!
A quick note… we have approx 800 of the small ‘Just Do It’ Nike bags in our school population, so our best advice – choose a different style, and put a name label on absolutely EVERYTHING!(we also have about 100 high quality coats in lost and found!)
My son is also starting secondary in September and I’m currently searching for the best/cheapest/quickest name tag labels! I’ll happily share if this is useful for families ☺️

Been using this company for these exact lables for over 5 years. They iron in and so not come off. I also never add them to labels or tags. I use hair straighteners and pop them in hem or someplace that cannot be cut out. Never lost an item yet with 2 kids.
Honest…. None work unless you can sew them in. Permanent marker and check as ironing
Do school bags have to be plain ( no logos ) And black ?
A few more building and estates updates! Our Yondr posts are now installed and Mrs Barnes has been busy numbering 1200 pouches ready for our pupils’ return!
Our library is starting to take shape and vinyl designs are being chosen for the walls! Our site team have been working so hard with contractors to get everything ready for first day back!
