Birley Academy star strikes gold at World Kickboxing Championships

Year 11 student Finlay from The Birley Academy, part of L.E.A.D. Academy Trust, has achieved remarkable success across two major international kickboxing championships – the WKA World Championships in Sheffield and the WTKA Unified World Championships in Italy – earning an incredible 14 medals and securing nine world titles across two associations.

Following his outstanding performance at the WKA World Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Finlay came away with three gold medals and a bronze, excelling in a range of disciplines. He began the Championships by taking gold in Traditional Forms and Traditional Weapons on the first day. He continued his strong performance on the second day, winning gold in Extreme Openhand and bronze in Extreme Weapons, demonstrating exceptional composure and athleticism against competitors from more than 15 countries, including Brazil, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the USA.

Building on this success, Finlay also competed at the WTKA Unified World Championships in Italy, where he secured five gold, three silver and two bronze medals, adding to his growing list of international achievements. These results mean he now proudly holds eight gold, three silver and three bronze medals across the two competitions combined.

Reflecting on his most recent success, Finlay said:

“I’m really thrilled with how I performed. Competing against top athletes from around the world and winning multiple medals is an amazing feeling. I’m excited to keep training and take on the next challenge!”
